Extractions – Adults

  • Do not use straws.
  • Do not vigorously swish or spit.
  • Avoid the surgical area while brushing your teeth.
  • Relax and do not do any strenuous activity the day of your surgery.
  • For bleeding, apply gentle pressure (bite) on the provided gauze pad for 10 to 15 minutes. Bleeding can be expected for up to 24 hours, however usually what appears to be a lot of red blood is actually very little blood with a lot of saliva. A lot of blood has a dark brown appearance. If bleeding is heavy, lie with your head elevated, apply an ice pack over the area, and take a black tea bag, wet it and firmly squeeze it out and use the tea bag in place of a gauze pad (light biting pressure in the surgical area) for 15 minutes.
  • Please take all medications as directed.
  • Swelling and discoloration are normal reactions. They can be controlled with ice and medication, but may last several days. Apply an ice pack, alternating 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off for the first 24 hours, then switch to hot compresses.
  • Don’t eat sharp (like chips), gritty, seedy, or spicy foods. Eat soft, nutritious foods.
